Archive Dispatch (12 December 2017): ClubApp & The Hyundai ClubApp Community Sports Initiative
Originally published on 12 December 2017 during The App Company's inaugural season in Rosedale, North Harbour, this archival record documents the launch of ClubApp (including the Hyundai ClubApp sponsorship model), built to give New Zealand sports clubs a dedicated mobile hub for draws, live scores, and sponsor visibility.
The 2017 ClubApp Vision: Empowering Grassroots Kiwi Sport
When theappcompany.nz first went live in December 2017 from 34 Triton Drive, Rosedale (North Harbour, Auckland), grassroots sports clubs across New Zealand faced a common communication bottleneck: draw changes, wet-weather ground closures, and sponsor promotions were fragmented across Facebook groups and email lists.
The ClubApp platform — alongside the Hyundai ClubApp community partnership programme — introduced a structured mobile template tailored for rugby, football, hockey, golf, and bowling clubs:
- • Instant Team Draws & Standings: Direct mobile access to Saturday kick-off times and turf allocations.
- • Push Alert Broadcasts: Immediate notifications when council parks closed due to winter rain.
- • Local Sponsor Integration: Dedicated digital placement for community backers, local dealerships, and clubroom partners.
- • SuperPWA Web Manifest Pioneer: Even in 2018, our WordPress stack deployed
/superpwa-manifest.jsonto support instant Android home-screen installation alongside store builds.
What 9 Years of ClubApp Telemetry Taught Us
Maintaining individual Apple App Store binaries for hundreds of small community clubs eventually ran into Apple's Guideline 4.2.6 (template/clustered app restrictions). That regulatory shift validated our early investment in Progressive Web Apps (superpwa-manifest.json).
Today, any Kiwi sports club can deploy a standalone PWA with live .ics calendar subscriptions and W3C Web Push in under 48 hours without an Apple Developer corporate D-U-N-S bottleneck.
